Apartment building in Lünen, 2023
Affordable housing from the 3D printer:
In Lünen we printed the first publicly subsidized apartment building.
The three-story building with six residential units and approximately 420 m² of living space was printed in the fall of 2023 and occupied the following year. The project was funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, enabling residents to pay rents of just €6 per square meter. The apartment building in Lünen demonstrates how 3D printing can be used to create affordable housing.

IMPRESSIONS OF THE PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
This is how affordable housing is created from the printer

Automation in residential construction
In Lünen, the walls of the first two floors were created using a 3D printer in just two or three steps. A building material from Heidelberg Materials was used.
High-ranking visitors to the construction site
Ina Scharrenbach, Minister for Home Affairs, Local Government, Construction and Digitalisation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited the construction site twice to see for herself the progress of the project.

The apartment building from a bird's eye view
After dismantling the 3D printer, another floor was added using conventional construction methods and the interior work was completed. Residents were able to move into their new homes just one year after the project began.
Comfortable meets affordable
Inside, most rooms give no indication that the house was 3D-printed. Many of the walls have been plastered, while the 3D-printed structures are on display in the stairwell.
Requirements and solutions
Requirements
The 3D printing project in Lünen presented a variety of challenges. Various requirements resulting from public funding had to be met. Furthermore, the construction site was quite narrow in the middle of a busy residential area, which presented us with minor logistical challenges. Since the project took place in the fall, frequently changing weather conditions were to be expected during the printing days.
Solutions
In close coordination with all stakeholders and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the requirements were easily met. Thanks to the modular configuration and small footprint of the COBOD BOD2, the printer could be easily set up and used in the confined construction area. And with the first-time use of our 3D MATCONTROL assistance system, consistent print results were achieved even under changing weather conditions on the construction site. The interior walls were also automatically smoothed by the printer to facilitate plastering.
Customer benefit
Affordable housing from a 3D printer: This project has demonstrated how this is already possible today. Thanks to the rapid and cost-effective implementation of 3D printing and the funding of this innovative construction method by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the apartment building in Lünen now offers its residents affordable living space for just €6 per square meter.
