Office building in Hausleiten, 2021

For STRABAG we have designed an architecturally interesting office building
directly printed the first building in Austria.

In Lower Austria, we constructed a 125 m² office building as an extension to an asphalt mixing plant for STRABAG SE. The country's first 3D-printed building was completed in just 45 hours. A printing material from Holcim was used, which played a key role in the successful implementation. The structures of the concrete print were deliberately left visible, giving the building a unique appearance not only in its form but also in its surface.

IMPRESSIONS OF THE PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

3D printing is coming to Austria

Precision meets speed

The configuration of the COBOD BOD 2 3D printer was adapted to the project requirements and made it possible to construct the office building in a single printing phase. The unique architecture with curved walls would have been very difficult to realize using conventional construction methods.

Precision meets speed

The three-layer wall structure was created by the 3D printer in just 45 hours. One of the hollow chambers was filled with insulation material, while the other was filled with in-situ concrete at structurally relevant locations.

Insights into the project process

From the construction of the printer to the final printing layer: Here you will find exciting insights into the project process.

Automation to the power of three

The completed office building impresses with its organic shapes in the interior and uses the printed structure of the walls to create visual accents.

Requirements and solutions

Requirements

As the first 3D-printed building, we also had to obtain the first building permit for such a building. We also had to try to keep the printing time as short as possible to ensure a fast project completion.

Solutions

To ensure compliance with building regulations and technical standards, close collaboration was carried out with local authorities to ensure that all legal permits were granted for the first 3D-printed building in Austria. Holcim's Tector Print printing material, specially developed for 3D printing, met the specific requirements of 3D concrete printing, including stability and durability.

Customer benefit

With the office building in Hausleiten, we brought 3D printing to Austria together with the project partners involved and created additional jobs for STRABAG SE, reflecting the company's innovative strength. We also demonstrated once again the architectural design freedom enabled by 3D building printing.
