DREIHAUS: Three apartment buildings in Heidelberg, 2025/26

Premiere for DREIHAUS and serial residential construction from the 3D printer:
The KRAUSGRUPPE is implementing three DREIHAUS buildings in Heidelberg.

30% faster and 10% more cost-effective: This is the promise of the DREIHÄUSER building type, optimized for 3D construction printing. We're demonstrating that we can achieve these figures in practice together with the KRAUSG RUPPE in Heidelberg. Just a few meters from Europe's largest 3D-printed building, the Wavehouse, three DREIHAUS buildings in sizes S, M, and L are being built.

This will create a total of 21 residential units, which will be used as a boarding house for commercial housing as early as next year. The project impressively demonstrates how flexible, scalable, and efficient serial construction can be using 3D printing.

IMPRESSIONS OF THE PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

Premiere for serial 3D building printing

Innovation meets practice

The DREIHAUS buildings are being built one by one by PERI 3D Construction. The printer is simply moved once between the individual buildings. Every DREIHAUS is divided into two segments. While printing is underway in one segment, the concrete slab is already being poured in the other half. This allows the apartment buildings to grow rapidly.

Three times DREIHAUS, please.

For the first time, three 3D-printed DREIHAUS multi-family houses will be built side by side in Heidelberg. The S, M, and L variants will offer between six and nine residential units with living areas ranging from 46 m² to 89 m². This will create a total of 21 residential units on the Campbell Heidelberg conversion site.

Debut for evoZero

In Heidelberg, the new Carbon Captured Net-Zero cement evoZero from Heidelberg Materials is being used for the first time in a 3D printing project during the construction of DREIHAUS M. This results in a particularly low carbon footprint.

Running smoothly

The three buildings offer not only different sizes but also design diversity: On the interior, the layers are automatically smoothed by the printer, allowing them to be left visible or plastered over later. The exterior facade features the classic 3D-printed look.

Requirements and solutions

Requirements

Together with all the project partners involved, we want to prove that the advantages of the DREIHAUS can be achieved in practice. To achieve this, the DREIHAUS was to be implemented – three times, in all sizes. At the client's request, the already fully planned DREIHAUS was to be slightly modified.

Solutions

To accommodate the three buildings in different sizes, the 3D printer will be relocated from building filed to building field. That way, all DREIHAUS variants to be printed sequentially, ensuring optimal coordination of the construction process. While the ceilings and subsequent trades are being constructed at one building half, printing can continue in the other one – a decisive efficiency advantage for serial construction directly on the construction site. The corresponding construction schedules and adjustments were implemented in close coordination with the planning offices of the Korte-Hoffmann Group and SSV Architekten.

Customer benefit

We expect to fully exploit the time and cost advantages of this new building type when implementing DREIHAUS and to demonstrate them in practice. The first DREIHAUS L, which has already been fully printed, was printed in just 26 working days, placing it right on schedule. The DREIHAUS debut in Heidelberg paves the way for scaling 3D-printed residential construction and clearly demonstrates that entering the 3D building printing market with DREIHAUS is now easier and more economically attractive than ever.
